Garmin GTM 20 Lifetime Traffic Receiver for Select Garmin GPS

- Sends real-time traffic information to your compatible Garmin navigator
- Warns of traffic jams, accidents, emergency activity, and construction
- Lifetime free subscription to traffic-information service
The GTM 20 provides traffic information to compatible Garmin GPS navigators. Using this data, your device alerts you to local traffic tie-ups and displays current traffic levels. The receiver also acts as an in-vehicle power charger. Traffic tie-ups can’t always be prevented. But with Garmin’s GTM 20 portable traffic receiver, you can often avoid them. Avoid Traffic Tie-ups The GTM 20 is an integrated FM TMC (Traffic Message Channel) traffic receiver, antenna and cigarette lighter adapter. Designed exclusively for the American version of compatible Garmin products, it receives digital information (where available) on traffic and road construction tie-ups that your compatible Garmin unit uses to offer an alternate route. TMC data, available in a fast-growing number of cities throughout North America, gives prompt, accurate notification of accidents, road construction, police, or emergency action, etc. –so you can visually monitor traffic flow and, if necessary, avoid traffic tie-ups. Plug and Drive The GTM 20 is a simple plug-and-play solution that combines a self-contained antenna, traffic link and 12-volt cigarette lighter adapter to provide real-time traffic alerts. No professional installation required. Just plug the GTM 20 into your compatible Garmin device, and you’re ready to receive data. Receive Real-time Traffic Data In most areas, depending on the service provider, TMC traffic broadcasts are continuous–there’s no waiting for scheduled traffic news updates or random alerts. With the GTM 20, you see traffic developments in real-time, as they happen, so you can make the right decision sooner. Because traffic broadcasts are received via a “silent” FM data channel, you can still listen to music or news programming on your car radio without interference from incoming FM traffic data transmissions. There are a complicated series of steps required to activate the subscription, but there are no instructions included that explain how to go through all the steps (including getting a code from the device and entering it onto a website then getting another code and entering it into the device).
Unless you have really good intuition about how to work electronic devices I would avoid this product and indeed avoid Garmin altogether.
Update: I called Garmin to get help on this and the wait time to speak to an agent is over 20 minutes!
Don’t buy this product unless you have a lot of time on your hands.
Update 2: I finally got through to Garmin and according to the rep, all I have to do is connect my Garmin to a computer, run an update from the website, then, when the screen displays “Additional Updates” scroll down and select GTM 20 Traffic and load that update then exit and plug in the traffic receiver and follow the prompts to update the reciever. Got that?
The instruction book that came with the device has a troubleshooting section. According to the book, if the device doesn’t work “Make sure it’s plugged in”.

Perfect addition to Garmin Nuvi 775T to provide detailed traffic alerts. Lifetime feature sounds goods, but technology changes so quickly that future value is unknown.

It does what it is supposed to do as long as it is receiving a signal. It seems to have difficulties obtaining signals at times.

If you purchase a Garmin GPS without the traffic feature because of MSN Direct wont be around in a couple of years, then consider purchasing this accessory. Although a little pricey, there’s no annual subscription and the cord also powers the GPS. The enclosed documentation is a little lacking, and the unit is limited, like all receivers, on the issue it works only where the FM signal/Service is transmitted. I live in the Metro NY area, and the unit works fine. Be aware, this accessory isn’t for all Garmin non-traffic GPS units, so check your model to make sure it’s compatible.

Works just as advertised. Only thing I’m not crazy about is the large size of the plug.
